FPGAs for Compute-Intensive Edge Devices

As compute workloads move to the edge, PolarFire® SoC and PolarFire FPGAs offer 30-50% lower total power than competing mid-range FPGAs, with five to ten times lower static power, making them ideal for a new range of compute-intensive edge devices, including those deployed in thermally and power-constrained environments. PolarFire SoC and PolarFire FPGA Smart Embedded Vision solutions include video, imaging, and Machine Learning (ML) IP and tools for accelerating designs that require high performance in low-power, small form-factors across the industrial, medical, broadcast, automotive, aerospace and defense markets.

Demonstration Application Designs

PolarFire SoC M-JPEG Video Compression Design

The PolarFire SoC video kit comes pre-programmed with an out-of-the-box video compression demonstration using MJPEG. It showcases the input of a full HD video stream, which is processed and compressed within the FPGA fabric and then run through FFMPEG running on Linux® on the RISC-V® subsystem of the device before displaying over Gigabit Ethernet. The solution includes a user-friendly GUI to control these image/video settings.

PolarFire FPGA 4K Dual Camera Video Design

This design features a fully integrated solution developed using Libero System-on-Chip (SoC) software to enable quick prototyping. This design includes:

  •  MIPI CSI-2 RX to read the 4K dual camera input
  • Color Filter Array (CFA) to Red, Green, Blue (RGB) conversion
  • Display controller
  • Picture in Picture (PIP)
  • 4K image panning through 1920 × 1080 output via HDMI 1.4 TX port
  • 1080p video input through HDMI 2.0 RX port
  • 4K video output via HDMI 2.0 TX port
  • Edge detection
  • Image enhancements such as contrast, brightness, color balance and gamma correction
  • Histogram plot of live video
  • A user-friendly GUI to control these image/video setting

PolarFire FPGA 12G CoaXPress GenICam® Design

This updated Generic Interface for Cameras (GenICam)-compliant design is interoperable with standard frame grabbers. A PolarFire device converts real-time video data from a dual camera sensor to CoaXPress data using the MIPI CSI-2® interface and then transmits this data over a coaxial cable to a CoaXPress device board. A second PolarFire device converts this data back to video data and displays it in full HD format (1920 × 1080, 60 Hz). A CoaXPress GenICam GUI allows you to control and adjust image settings.

PolarFire FPGA 12G-SDI Design

A PolarFire device converts real-time video data from a dual camera sensor (over MIPI CSI-2) is to a YCbCr 422 format and transmits it using the 12G-SDI IP over the 12G PolarFire FPGA transceivers. This data loops back to the PolarFire device via an SDI daughter card and is displayed over HDMI 2.0.

PolarFire FPGA USXGMII Design

A test module transmits Ethernet traffic to the USXGMII IP on the PolarFire device through a multi-gigabit Ethernet PHY (10 Gbps/5 Gbps/2.5 Gbps/1 Gbps). This data loops back to the test module through the PHY where it checks for and displays CRC error information.
