IEC 60730 Class B and C Safety Standards


IEC 60335 is the safety standard for household appliances and similar appliances with automatic electrical controls. IEC 60335 refers to the IEC 60730 standard for electronic controls of such appliances and IEC 60730 is currently mandatory for home appliances sold in Europe and other places around the world.

Annex H in IEC 60730-1 defines the safety requirements for electronic controls and Table H.1 (H.11.12.7 in edition 3) defines the acceptable measures to address faults and errors. This standard covers the safety levels referred to as Class B, which includes thermal cut-out functions, and Class C, which covers functions with higher risk of failure, such as automatic gas burner controls.

The IEC 60730 Class B library is a software library that contains all the diagnostic tests demanded by the IEC 60730 standard to submit your end product for Class B certification. The library is certified by UL and verified by VDE. We distribute it as a stand-alone software package for dsPIC33E DSCs, PIC24F and SAM MCUs or as an MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC) package for PIC® and AVR® MCUs. The library is free to use with our MCUs and DSCs. We recommend using the library with one of the safety-certified MPLAB XC PRO functional safety compilers.

Achieving Class C Safety Level


For appliances where failures are associated with high risk, such as automated gas burner control applications, the IEC 60730 Class C safety level is likely to apply. The public and free Class B library does not cover all the diagnostic tests required for Class C safety levels.
